How much is it?
Many of you have asked me how much life costs in Dubai. So here I am to give you a rough idea.
1 AED (United Arab Emirates dirham) = 0.17 Euros
1 AED = 0.14 GBP
1 AED = 0.27 U.S. dollars
Our 2BHK (bedroom-hall-kitchen) apartment including parking space costs AED 94.500 for a year. Sorry Guys there is no option for not including the parking, you always must pay for it. For the same price in the city centre you can only get a 1BHK flat.
Renting a car including insurance starts from AED 1600 per month.
Eating out in a food court will be around 20-30 dirham, which is just like in Budapest. But I’ve been to places where they charge even 5 times more.
Doing a shopping at a hypermarket would be cheaper than in Europe. Except some vegetables and fruits which cost more.
Sim card is very expensive: 160 dirhams. Both telecommunication companies are owned by one person… Calling abroad is very expensive too.
Books, cloths, shoes, furniture, etc are slightly cheaper than in Europe as there is no VAT on it – yet. But when the sales is on, you cannot compare the prices to any other countries’. I was just told that EVERYTHING at Pierre Cardin is 75% off now.
Going out: there is a nice bar called Barasti where we usually go out. A pint of beer there costs 20-30 dirhams. But I’m talking about a very nice place now. Anyways, as alcohol can be consumed only at certain places, I don’t think you would get it for much less somewhere else.
Taxis charge for 1 km around 3 dirham. A bus ticket costs 2-3 dirham.
My hairdresser charges for my highlighting 550 dirhams. A haircut with a blow-dry costs usually AED 300-600. Beauty salons in the malls are as expensive as in the UK. But if you visit the ones on the streets, you end up paying much less.
In conclusion, if we compare the prices to the ones in England, its more less the same or even lower.
Mennyi is az annyi?
Sokan kerdeztetek mennyibe is kerul az elet Dubaiban. Hat most itt jon par adat.
A mi ket szobas lakasunkert fizetunk 94.500 dirhamot egy evben, ami kb 4 milla. Es ez meg az olcsobb kornyeken van. A belvarosban ezert az osszegert egy 1 szoba, halos lakast lehet csak talalni.
Autoberles biztositassal egy honapra 64000 Ft-tol kezdodik.
Kint enni egy gyorskajaldaban, mint pl ami nalunk a Westendben van, olyan 1000-1500Ft. De ettem mar olyan helyen is, ahol ugyanaz az adag kaja 5-szor tobbe kerult.
Bevasarlas egy Tesco jellegu boltban szerintem nagyjabol annyi, mint otthon, de van ami olcsobb is. Viszont par gyumolcs es zoldseg dragabb. De ez mondjuk ertheto itt a sivatag kozepen.
A sim kartya viszont joval dragabb, 6400 Ft. Ez ugyanis azert van, mert ugyan ket telefontarsasag van kikialtva, hogy ugy tunjon mintha lenne verseny a piacon, de valojaban a tulaj egy. Igy sokmindent megtehetnek. Pl a kulfoldi telefon arakat felnyomjak, mert ugye a lakossag csupan 90%-a hivja rendszeresen kulfoldet…, a skypeot pedig letiltjak, hogy ingyen ugyan mar ne beszeljel. Meg jo, hogy az okos magyarok mindig megtalaljak a kiskapukat….
Buszjegy: 80-150 Ft. A taxi km-re szamitva olcsobb, mint otthon. Viszont ha nem ismered a varost, akkor persze gyakran eszreveszed, hogy ugyanaz elott a mozi elott mesz el mar harmadszorra. De a taxis tema meger egy kulon postot.
Konyv, ruha, cipo, butor ugyanannyi, kicsivel olcsobb, mint otthon, ugyanis itt nincs AFA. Egyelore. De jovore bevezetik azt is. Bar kepzeljetek el, epp a konzul mondta, hogy o vett szekeket meg asztalt, amit hazakuldott innen, mert igy sokkal olcsobban jott ki, mintha otthon vette volna meg.
Szorakozas: az egyik kedvenc helyunk a Barasti, ami egy bar a tengerparton. Ott egy uveg sor olyan 1000Ft-nal kezdodik. De ez egy jo hely. Mivel alkoholt csak ilyen elit barokban lehet kapni, ezert ennek ez az ara. De egy kavet meg lehet inni normalis aron is.
Ami viszont dragabb, az a fodrasz. Az en hajamat kiszokiteni tobb, mint 20000 Ft kerul. De egy sima hajvagas is 10.000 Ft-nal kezdodik. A kozmetika a bevasarlo kozpontokban draga. Az utcai kozmetikak viszont joval olcsobbak, mint otthon.
Lenyegeben szerintem a az ingatlan arakban van nagy elteres. Foleg kis hazankhoz viszonyitva. Azt a lakast, amiben most lakunk fele aron ki lehetne berelni Budapesten. Viszont ami jo, hogy ha itt kiarusitas van, akkor az kiarusitas. Nem am leviszik az arat egy bugyinak, hogy kitehessek a kirakatba: “50%-os kiarusitas”. A Pierre Cardinban most pl MINDEN 75% olcsobb. No ezt kapd ki!
A legfrissebb pletyka a varosban
Szolva itt el egy angol leanyzo (30), immar 3 eve Dubaiban. Azota is boszen tartja angol szokasat, miszerint sik reszegre issza magat mindig ha teheti. Ez tortent ezen az ominozus esten is, mikor is felszedett egy angol turistat, ami ugye naluk, mint tudjuk eleg gyorsan megy. (gyakran bemutatkozas nelkul is...) Lenyeg a lenyeg, nemsokara a tengerparton kotottek ki “erdekes”, de arab vilagba semmikepp nem illo pozicioban. Arra jart a rendorbacsi, (mert hogy ezek mindenhol ott vannak am!) es szepen kerte oket, hogy hagyjak abba. Majd bekesen tovabbment. Ez a helyi pletyka valtozat, amit en a lany baratnojenek a haverjanak az ismerosetol hallottam! Szoval tuti forras! De a zsaru, a kis kivancsi csak visszament nemsokara. Hat a sracok, a szerencsetlenek, ahelyett, hogy eltuntek volna, ott nyomtak ezerrel. Hat a rendorbacsi osszerancolta a szemeit, es mondott egy ejnye-bejnyet, mire az a meg nalam is szokebb szoke no, nekidobta a szandaljat a zsarunak. Hat erre persze, a hekus total beragott. Az ujdonsult 'szerelmesek' meg a dutyiban kotottek ki, legutolso infok szerint 6 evre. A vicces a sztoriban, hogy az indok tobbek kozott a kovetkezo volt: "having sex outside marriage" azaz hazassagon kivuli szex.
Kerdem en: 3 ev tenyleg nem eleg arra, hogy rajojjunk, hogy ez egy mas kultura?

Go cosmopolitan
…why I chose Dubai.
Dubai has always attracted me with its cosmoplitan style. I guess it was coz when I studied in Southampton I met many students coming from all sort of culture. In a 16 bedroom house – 11 different nationalities lived together! We had so much fun! Those were the days...
Some interesting demographic datas:
- Girls, this is the place to be!! 78% are male and 22% female. :)))
- Feeling like in India… According to the census conducted by the Statistics Center of Dubai, the population of the emirate was 1,422,000 as of 2006, 17% of the population of the emirate was made up of UAE nationals. Approximately 85% of the expatriate population was Asian, chiefly Indian (51%), Pakistani (16%), Bangladeshi (9%) and Filipino (3%). About 3% of the total population of Dubai was categorized as "Western".
- Population growth is currently around 6% and increasing, making the city one of the fastest growing urban areas in the world.
- The average age of total Dubai population is about 32 years.

Mindig is vonzott ez a varos a kozmopolita mivolta miatt. Azt hiszem azert, mert mikior Southamptonban tanultam, nagyon sokfajta kulturaval talalkoztam. 16 szobas lakasban – 11 kulonbozo nemztet lakott egyutt. Regi szep idok...
Par erdekes demografiai adat Dubairol:
- Csajok, ez a mi helyunk!! A lakossag 78%-a ferfi es 22%-a no. :)
- Szinte Indiaban erzem magam… A 2006-os nepszamlalasi adatok alapjan Dubai lakossaga 1,442,000 volt 2006-ban. Evente ez kb 6%-kal no, igy mara ez kb. 1,442,000 + 1,442,000 x 0,06 + (1,442,000 x 0,06) x 0,06 +/- par szazalek :)) A lakossag mindossze 17% helyi arab, azaz rendelkezik Egyesult Arab Emiratusok beli utlevellel. 85% azsiai: indiai 51%, pakszitani 16%, bangladeshi 9% es filipin 3%. A lakossag csupan 3% “Nyugati” : Europai, Amerikai, Ausztral.
- Atlag eletkor: 32 ev.
- A tobb nemzetuseget mi sem mutatja jobban, mint a valtozatos izvilag, ami itt talalhato.

By crowd I mean a hell lot of people
I'll never forget my first day. I was walking around in the city and suddenly found myself in the middle of the crowd. So many people on the streets, unbelievable! I wanted to get some things from a hypermarket, but soon I wished I wouldn’t have wanted it. Similar to a European Christmas shopping day – with the main exeption: these Guys had no clue about politeness. Letting a lady going first, saying sorry – seemed like it just simply didn’t exit in their culture. I think some people are not clear with the meaning of ‘queuing’ either.
Actually it’s the same with the traffic. They are driving me crazy with the never ending honking… You are walking on the side of the road coz as I said there is no pathway, and instead of passing you, they start honking. I generously use the wide range of Hungarian words that express the 4 letter English one.
Ami sok, az sok
Sosem felejtem el az elso napom, mikor felfedezo utra mentem. Valahogy elkeveredtem az indiai negyedbe. Kepzeljetek el egy olyan tomeget, amit egy Michael Jackson koncerten lattok, azzal a kulonbseggel, hogy az emberek nem a szinpad fele sorodnak, hanem mindenfele. Bementem egy szupermarketbe, de hamar meg is bantam. Olyan mint nalunk otthon egy december 23-a a Tescoban. Csak az a kulonbseg, hogy mig a mi nemzetunkben az emberek altalaban udvariasak, itt szerintem ez a fogalmat siman nem ismerik. Mintahogy azt se, hogy egy not eloreengedni, vagy sorba allni.
Itt egy europainak ez a vezetesi stilus egy remalom. Engem a sirba tudnak kergetni a folytonos dudalassal. Siman setalsz az ut szelen, mert ugye jarda nincs, es folyton dudalnak. No ilyenkor gyakran eloveszem ekes magyar szavainkat…
Get lost!
… asking for directions in Dubai.
There is no point of buying a map in Dubai. Why? Simply coz it gets updated in a few days. So if you get lost in this city, just ask someone for direction. But don’t get surprised if he says: “haa, thik hai….just keep going straight then ask someone there.” They are actually quite clever, coz this is definitely the easiest way for you as well as for him – still its funny.
Needed direction while driving? Just stop at the traffic light and shout at the other drivers on the road. They’ll be happy to help you.

… hogyan kerjunk utmutatast Dubaiban.
Eloszor is: nincs ertelme Dubai terkepet venni. Hogy miert? Mert par napon belul ugyis elavul az epitkezesek miatt. Es ez komoly! Szoval ha eltevednel a varosban, a legjobb ha valakit megkerdezel merre tovabb. Ne lepodj meg, ha azt mondja: “haa, thik hai (indiaiul ok)… csak menj egyenesen egy jo ideig, es kerdezz meg ott valakit.” Eloszor csak mosolyogtam ezen a vicces utbaigazitason, de valojaban igazuk van. Igy a legegyszerubb elmagyarazni.
Ha vezetes kozben tevednel el, csak tekerd le az ablakod, es kiabalj at a melletted levo kocsinak. Ne aggodj, ok is mindig letekerik ilyenkor, es orommel segitenek.

Mission impossible: getting from “A” to “B”
Before moving here, I read and heard a lot about the horrible situation. But not even in my worst nightmare I saw this. First of all, there is no public transportation (yet). There are some buses but never on time. And even if they come, they are just fully packed. The first few seats are reserved for women but not the gangway. So how to get home if not by public transportation? Well, just catch a taxi. As simple it is, isn’t it? Me, naive girl, I thought I just call up the taxi station and order for one. But these numbers are always engaged. And even if they answer and say we’ll be there in an hour, they never turn up. So what to do? Try to catch a taxi yourself. So you are standing on the road waving to all the taxis, but they just don’t stop. Most of them have a passenger, the others just don’t fancy you. Or God knows…
Actually I see the point why it’s not possible to order a cab in this traffic. It is just simply not worth to the driver. By the time he would get there, he could have made another few lifts.
So we’ve spent ages trying to catch a taxi. Really, you Guys won’t believe it, just like I didn’t believe it myself, but usually catching a taxi takes us a minimum of 1 hour. We are trying to come out with different techniques, but haven’t found the right one yet. :)
Oh, and why I am not driving a car myself? Coz I am just not allowed to. And its driving me crazy! With my resident visa I am not allowed to use my international license, only with a visit one I could. I have to go through all the procedures again and pass the driving test.
Moreover there is another 2-3 months of waiting list at the driving schools. And most people fail, even if they’ve been driving for years before. I guess they just don’t wanna increase the traffic.

I'm just wondering how tourists survive in this city. Spending half of their holidays in the car. I don’t wanna scare you Guys. Do come and visit me and the city.

Mielott Dubaiba koltoztem, hallottam mar sok cifra dolgot az itteni kozlekedesrol. De meg legszornyubb remalmaimban sem lattam, hogy ez ilyen is lehet. Eloszor is olyan, hogy tomegkozlekedes lenyegeben nem letezik. Ugyan neha felbukkan egy-egy busz a megalloban, de tuti, hogy nem a menetrend szerint. Es ha meg jonnek is, akkor sincs eselyed felszallni ra, mivel teljesen tomve van. A nok csak az elso par sorba ulhetnek, a hatso resz a ferfiaknak van fenntartva. Tehat hogyan is erjunk haza ha nincs tomegkozlekedes? Hat fogj egy taxit. Egyszeru, nem…? En kis naivan azt hittem, hogy majd hivok egyet, ahogy ezt otthon szoktuk. De a taxi allomas vonalai mindig foglaltak. Ha veletlenul fel is veszik es rendelsz egyet, akkor meg csak varsz es varsz… es siman nem jonnek el. Tehat a kerdes meg mindig marad – hogyan jussunk haza egy hosszu faraszto nap utan? Add fel a nyugati konfortot, menj ki magad az utcara, es fogj ott egy taxit, ha annyira haza akarsz menni. Szoval kimegy integetni a taxiknak, akik vagy utassal mennek, vagy csak siman nem allnak meg. Volt mar olyan is, hogy megallt, megkerdezte hova megyunk, es gyorsan elhajtott – o ugyanis nem akarja a dugoban vesztegetni az idejet, marpedig arra az van…
Szoval addig integetunk, mig valaki meg nem all. Tenyleg nem hiszitek el, de altalaban egy oraba telik, mire verge felvesz valaki. Pedig nagyon hevesen probalom lobogtatni szoke hajamat – azt mondtak az segit, de nem. :)
Valojaban ertheto, hogy nem lehet taxit rendelni hazhoz ebben az orult forgalomban. Egyszeruen nem erne meg a taxisoknak. Mire odaernek, mar egy jopar masik fuvart lerendezhetnenek.
Miert nem vezetek en magam? No ez az, ami megorit – ha rezidens vizumod van, nem fogadjak el se a nemzetkozi se a magyar jogsit. Persze a legtobb europait, beleertve a szlovakot es a lengyelt is elfogadjak, de mi meg nem harcoltuk ki. Ez olyan magyaros, nem? Szoval kezdhetem az egeszet elorol: orvosi vizsgalat, kresz, rutin, stb. Persze csak egy jo par honap mulva, mivel egy 2-3 honapos varolista van. Es a legtobb embert meghuzzak. Egyreszt, hogy penzt csinaljanak ebbol is, masreszt, mert mar igy is tul sok a kocsi az utakon. Hallottam valakirol, akinek 4000 dirhamjaba azaz kb. 170 000 forintba kerult, mire megszerezte.
Gyalogosan Dubaiban – jarda az nem nagyon van, de homok annal tobb a patkan kivul… Zebra se nagyon van, de gyalogos jelzolampa se. Az utak 3-4 savosak altalaban. No ezen kell atkelni. Ugyan felelmetesen hangzik, de dugoban siman at lehet setalni.
Valojaban csak azon gondolkodom, hogy elik meg a turistak azt, hogy a nyaralasuk felet a kocsiban a dugoban kell tolteniuk. Ezzel persze nem akarok senki lebeszelni arrol, hogy meglatogasson, de ide csak egy hetvegere senki ne akarjon jonni.
Some like it hot - Weather in Dubai
The funny thing is, that I just love it. All the Indians who have a very similar weather back home, suffer over here. But me, I'm just so happy to see the sun. This 40 degrees are still ok for me. Actually I am cold many times. We keep switching off the AC with Priti everywhere and open the windows to let the warm come in.
The other day it was raining! It hasn’t rained since December. Ok, this time it was an artificial rain too…

Van aki forron szereti - Idojaras Dubaiban
En egyszeruen imadom!! Az osszes indiai csak szenved, pedig az o idojarasuk kozelebb van az ittenihez, mint a mienk. Viszont sut a nap! Mielott kijottem lelkileg nagyon felkeszultem erre az idojarasra. Ez a 40 fok meg ok nekem. Valojban a vicces az, hogy tobbet fazom, mint melegem van. Nem gyozzuk lekapcsolgatni a legkondit Pritivel, es nyitogatni az ablakokat, hogy bejojjon egy kis meleg. A minap esett is az eso, pedig december ota nem tette. Ok, most is csak mueso volt.
